Apocalyptic New Album “WEEDKILLER” from Ashnikko
Punk and hip-hop artist Ashnikko, best known for TikTok viral singles like “Stupid” and “Working Bitch”, released their sophomore album WEEDKILLER on Friday. While this album maintains the same feminist tilt and alt-rap sound that largely set the tone for previous releases, Ashnikko delivers a more serious, cohesive, and allegorical message in WEEDKILLER.
The album’s first song “World Eater” perfectly sets the tone for the next thirty minutes of the album, placing the listener in a dystopian landscape that becomes the setting for the remaining tracks. Ashnikko’s sultry, slurred, and sometimes raspy, growled vocals dominate over haunting, industrial electronic beats, while the singer’s lyrics paint a picture of a post-apocalyptic wasteland. In an interview with NPR, the singer said that the album is based of their concepts for an allegorical utopia, destroyed by biomatter harvesting machines called “Weedkillers”.
The album includes previously released singles “WEEDKILLER”, “Cheerleader”, “Worms”, and “You Make Me Sick!”, as well as collaborations with indie artists Ethel Cain and Daniela Lalita. WEEDKILLER is available to stream on Spotify, and videos for “Cheerleader”, “You Make Me Sick”, “Worms”, “WEEDKILLER”, and “Possession of a Weapon” are now on YouTube.
